CAN I PARTICIPATE IF I’M NOT ON RAVELRY?
YES! Join in the KAL fun by using the hashtag #grandopeningkal on Instagram. Share photos and chat with other knitters. Don’t forget to tag me @tellybeanknits and any yarn dyers you might be using to create your shawl.
WHY ARE ALL YOUR PHOTOS IN BLACK & WHITE?
While the design of this shawl is not a surprise, the yarn is! I used the Suburban Stitcher “I’m Dreaming of a Pink Christmas” advent yarn kit for my shawl sample. This kit is meant to be opened one day at a time between December 1st-25th. To keep the yarn a secret for everyone who purchased this kit, I will not be sharing full color photos of the shawl until December 28th.
WHAT YARN DID YOU USE FOR YOUR SHAWL?
I used the Suburban Stitcher advent kit to knit my shawl. The kit includes twenty-five 20g (90 yard) mini skeins. The yarn is a 4-ply fingering weight sock yarn (75% Superwash Merino, 25% Superwash nylon). This year's theme for the Suburban Stitcher kit is "I'm Dreaming of a Pink Christmas." It was dyed to fade cohesively from one color to the next.
If you are curious about the kit, I will be virtually opening every mini skein on my Instagram stories beginning December 1st. I'll share one mini skein a day until all the minis are open! If you would like to follow along, join me @tellybeanknits to see all the mini-skein goodness!
DOES MY YARN NEED TO FADE?
NOPE! Actually, the construction is even more dramatic if you are working with non-fading yarn.
CAN I USED A DIFFERENT ADVENT YARN KIT FOR MY SHAWL?
Absolutely! The kit I used includes twenty-five 20g (90 yard) mini skeins. While the kit I used was dyed as a fade, this pattern was designed to work with almost any combination of colors. In fact, a non-fading kit will draw attention to the construction and make your shawl more dramatic.
WHAT IF MY ADVENT YARN KIT DOESN’T HAVE 25 COLORS?
Consider using the same color twice! Several of my testers used COLOR 1 for SECTIONS 1 & 2. Both of these sections require a small amount of yardage, so they are a great place to make a modification. You could also use a color from one of the early sections and repeat it in a later section. It’s easy to make a plan for repeating a color if you look over the yardage breakdown above.
CAN I MAKE MY OWN KIT USING LEFTOVER YARN FROM MY STASH?
Most Definitely! This pattern includes a detailed breakdown of the yardage for every section, so you can plan for a shawl that fits your stash. PLUS, the Getting Ready Guide includes a coloring page, so you can brainstorm the scrappy shawl of your dreams.
DO I HAVE TO USE 25 COLORS?
NOPE! Use as many or as few colors as you like! Because each section is a different texture, you can knit this shawl using a single color. Choose 1, 2, 3... or 25 colors! PRO TIP: If you use a single color, there will be fewer ends to weave in when you finish your shawl.
WHAT IF MY MINI SKEINS AREN’T 90 YARDS [82 meters]?
I know that there are several popular advent yarn kits that include 80 yard mini skeins. Not to worry! You can still knit this shawl! There are is only one section in the shawl that recommends more than 80 yards of yarn (SECTION 25), so…
If you are using smaller minis, consider going down a needle size to achieve a denser gauge. This will make for a smaller shawl, but it will also use less yardage.
AND, keep in mind that the yardages in my pattern include a 15% security. This means that the yardages I recommend in the pattern are based on my sample PLUS 15%. This 15% security helps to account for differences in fiber content, knitting styles, etc, so that you are less likely to run out of yarn. It’s a small amount of yarn, but it could make a big difference in your shawl.
WHERE CAN I FIND ERRATA FOR THIS PATTERN?
If there is errata discovered in any of the daily sections during December, I will post corrections in the Ravelry threads. For non-Ravelry users, I will post errata on my website: HERE. I will update any necessary sections when I send out the next day’s section, so that I don’t clog your inbox with extra messages.
DO YOU LOVE DECEMBER? THE HOLIDAYS? CHRISTMAS?
With my whole heart.
